To work aboard British flagged vessels, you'll need a commercial endorsement as per the MCA's codes of practice small commercial vessels (SCV).

Ready to enhance your skills with some fantastic training courses  that will make you eligible for this endorsement. This is your ticket to work with us on the Plastic Fishing Vessels in London!

Here’s what you need:

Powerboat Level 2 qualification or higher

PPR Certificate

GMDSS VHF Marine Radio Licence

RYA/MCA Sea Survival Certificate

If you opt for the STCW route keep in mind that short courses need renewal every five years at a cost of over £1000.

The RYA Route is hassle-free, although you don’t need to present the First Aid Certificate during the, it’s essential for operating commercially.

We recommend Dr Sally HERE

She will go through the form with you carefully so everything is right before you send it to the RYA, she is at Heathrow but is able to go through the form with you, assess your eye sight and sign it off which your GP will not do all for her fixed fee which is lower than anyone else. More importantly she will give the eye test, go through the paperwork carefully so it i not returned and keeps a copy on file incase you lose it!

Things to note

Your BMI will be assessed so trim those pounds!

Pre check your blood pressure so this does not fail you, see you GP prior if this is a problem, to prevent white coat syndrome, do not rush there, drink tea or coffee prior and give yourself time to chill to bring your blood pressure down.

See below, access your NHS online it is simple to do but hard on the day!

Print out the Form and fill in the first page

Bring you ID DVLC or Passport

Update – Important Change from January 2026  If you are booking an ML5 Seafarer medical, there has been an important change to the guidance from January 2026 that you need to be aware of.

You must now provide your full GP medical record at the time of your ML5 appointment. This is a mandatory requirement. Without your full medical record, she cannot complete your ML5 medical.

What does “full medical record” actually mean?

It means your entire GP record, not just a summary.

The easiest way is to log in and get your NHS App PRIOR to the Medical.

In short take all the paperwork, be on time and you will get through.
