MCA Fire Safety Awareness Course  

This course is a Marine Coastguard Agency (MCA) approved Boatmaster Licence ancillary course, qualifying the holder for all waters (cat. A,B,C,D).

Other courses for the BML are the STCW PST (Sea Survival) and STCW EFA (Elementary First Aid).

SYLLABUS as per MSN1853 page 42

Combustion and the fire triangle
Knowledge of types and sources of ignition likely to be found on vessels
Awareness of flammable materials, fire hazards and spread of fire
Knowledge of best practice precautions and awareness of need for vigilance
Knowledge of classification of fires (A, B, C & D) and correct extinguishing equipment and methods for each type
Types of extinguishers: water, dry powder, foam, CO2, fire blanket and fire hoses.
How to extinguish a fire including practical session.
Knowledge of correct location of fire fighting equipment on vessel
Awareness of types and use of fixed fire-fighting installations on vessels
